TARGET: The Anesthesia Research Group for Education Technology

We are a multi-institution consortium which has been formed with the mission of leveraging technology to address common obstacles within anesthesia education and training. We seek to be collaborative as we work to address issues common among anesthesiology training programs.

Projects:

Creation of a precision education tool for anesthesiology residency training
  • • Overview: We aim to build an automated system that will target individualized educational content for trainees via a mobile app based on real time learner experience and competency data. We anticipate our system will allow us to train physicians more effectively and efficiently in order to meet the growing patient care needs of our communities.
  • • Goals:
    • ◦ Develop a model of the learner's knowledge, skills and experience
      • ▪ Inputs will initially include information from a quiz bank, resident rotation schedule and workplace based assessments. Future plans for inputs also include information gleaned from the EMR such as type of anesthetic performed or ICD-9 diagnoses encountered.
    • ◦ Automate frequent updates to the model of the learner
    • ◦ Curate and map educational content to represent the field of anesthesiology
    • ◦ Suggest content to the learner in app displaying an education news feed that is relevant to the learner based on their context, experience, and current knowledge and skills
  • • Research Aim:
    • ◦ Feasibility of creating a dynamic model of a learner
    • ◦ Feasibility of automation of delivery of tailored content
    • ◦ Usability and utility of the APP and content, as wells as some data on user behavior
    • ◦ Development of metrics to assess impact
      • ▪ Resident perceptions and usage
      • ▪ Outcomes
